Critical assessment

The “Don’t Say Gay Bill”, which is not actually about cishet conservatives conflating gender identity and orientation with sexual acts. I definitely get “Knock Knock” vibes from “Louisa, Please Come Home” which is, only on the surface, a completely different kind of short story. The difference is, Louisa only realises she’s completely alone at the end of the story, not in the opening line. If interesting main characters require moral shortcomings, Louisa is a brilliant creation. She ruins her own sister’s wedding by turning the focus onto herself.

"Louisa, Please Come Home" is a short story by Shirley Jackson first published in 1960 in May's edition of Ladies Home Journal entitled "Louisa, Please". It has since been reprinted in the collections Come Along with Me , Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives and Dark Tales . The question paused by this story is whether Louisa should fight to retain her old identity in her hometown or accept the new identity acquired in the city. This could illustrate the tag-of-war between progressivism and conservatism.

There’s no question about Louisa staying on the stoop trying to persuade her mother that she is, in fact, Louisa. I doubt she’ll give them much thought at all over the course of her life, except on her own birthday. It would be difficult to craft a story which allows audiences proper insight into the mind of the police officer. He thought it acceptable to send a different boy home with a mother who has lost her own son. Perhaps he grew up with chickens, and had observed that a clucky hen can indeed be pacified by giving her the egg of another chicken, or even a golf ball. It is a spectacular feat of dehumanisation to believe that a human child can be swapped in the same way, and that a human mother would silently make do with a ‘dummy egg’.

They are in recognition of her legacy in writing, and are awarded for outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic. The Happy Hypocrite by Max Beerbohm also explores the difference between a real person and an idealised version of that same person, through the rose-tinted glasses of a lover. Louisa’s parents never saw their daughter Louisa as a person in her own rigfht. The ending clues us in to why she would’ve wanted to run away in the first place; she was basically an apparition.

Biographers believe this short story — along with "The Missing Girl" — is inspired by the seven people who disappeared in the woods around Bennington, Vermont between 1945 and 1950, near where Shirley Jackson lived from 1945 until her death. The character of James Harris is central to the story, as with other stories in the collection. Jessica Ferri claims that the devilish Harris appears in more than half the stories, often making suggestions. His character was inspired by a character of the same name from a folk ballad, "The Daemon Lover", about a woman who is persuaded by the Devil to run away with him. Ferri claims that Jackson's story collection displays "the presence of total and absolute evil in daily life", reinforced by the ominous James Harris. Reviewer L. Timmel Duchamp claims that most of Jackson's fiction "presents mundane reality as troubled with sinister currents", citing this short story as an example.

In 1959, she published The Haunting of Hill House, a supernatural horror novel widely considered to be one of the best ghost stories ever written. Jackson's 1962 novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a Gothic mystery which has been described as Jackson's masterpiece. Jackson was raised in Burlingame, California, an affluent suburb of San Francisco, where her family resided in a two-story brick home located at 1609 Forest View Road.

If you are looking for a book that combines travel writing with dry humor, than look no further than the work of this Aussie backpacker. I came across his name while traveling myself - I asked one of my fellow travelers if she could recommend a funny travel writer, and she suggested Moore. In this book the author sets off from London at some point in the late 1990s, determined to get home to Sydney by an overland route and without getting on a plane. He has an interest in checking out the old hippie trail as well. Most travel writers inform us about the culture, history, cuisine, and people of distant lands as they move across a landscape, getting into adventures, meeting locals, and sharing their knowledge and perceptions.

Really funny without ever going over-the-top to exaggerate situations. Quite an entertaining journey in which Mr Moore seemed to have fulfilled his ambition to retrace the hippy trail - filled with uproarious encounters specially that English teacher on the way to Prague and on the China-Laotian border and also some quite poignant ones like those in Bosnia.... I was particularly interested in the chapters on the Balkans. He must look back on that part of his journey and think how utterly mad it was. Personally, I can think of very little less appealing than living out of a backpack for six straight months while travelling on a hell of a lot of buses, because frankly?

I love to travel and I thought I would love this book but it was lacking in any real insight or wisdom. Just kind of a travel log about an interesting trip. Don't buy this because it might be a Bill Bryson... Bryson does a good book, with his astute descriptions of people he meets, and places he sees. This gives good descriptions of places that he sees, but there's virtually no people involved. Which is a shame, because if this self-styled hippie actually bothered to speak to other people, it would be quite a good book.

The "short way" home still takes 24 hours, and that's more than enough for me. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. The seller has not specified a postage method to United States. The account of an eight-month trip over land and sea from London to Sydney by a young Australian.

A fun, quick read with good, brisk writing and interesting observations. I agree with previous reviewers that it's fine to skip chapters you're not interested in; it's easy to get back into the book at any point. I loved the music recommendations at the beginning of each chapter. This was the first journey I took with Peter Moore, and it was a hell of a trip.... It was everything you want to have when you go on a nine months trip around the world. OK, so China was a bit long, but it's a big country after all!!!

It brought back memories of back packing in China in 1990. You made me remember the frustration of trying to arrange anything there in those days. Days there were either very hard or very rewarding.

But, sadly, it's not - not a bad book, but not the most entertaining; and no, not the funniest either. For such a grand journey, the book often seems too short , i.e. there are sections in which I would have appreciated hearing some more about what he saw and did. This was Moore's first book, so maybe he gets more descriptive in later releases, but in this one he often just skims the surface and notes a couple of interesting features of the culture and place. The effect is often one of having a few beers with an interesting traveler in some hostel or guesthouse somewhere. Unlike some writers, Moore shows little interest in self-revelation - sharing his adventures and his grumbling humor are the main things. That book saw me travel overland from London to Sydney, a journey that was full of hair-raising adventures but also incredible kindness and hospitality. I've picked up a few Peter Moore books in my time but I've always put them down again somewhat disappointed. "The Wrong Way Home" is a good example of this. This book just wasn't my cup of tea, but I know other people have enjoyed it. This is the story of the author, Peter Moore, who decides to travel home from London to Sydney without stepping on an aeroplane. Not his best book that I have read yet but still good.

Poignantly and movingly, today on VJ day I have just read the section about your grandfather. With woefully inadequate funds and little hope of actually making it through such notorious hot-spots as the Balkans, Iran and Afghanistan, I threw caution to the wind and followed the trail overland to the East. An exciting and interesting tale of a mans travels though beautiful countrys and dam right dangerous places. On completion, I went on to read 'Vroom with a View' and tracked down his website. He has numerous titles to his name and eventually I'll read all of them. Though this trip was ~10 years ago, it was wonderful insight into travel to exotic places like Iran, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Laos, plus others.
